Good News for Journalists Miller and Cooper

Judith Miller of The New York Times and Matthew Cooper of Time magazine - both of whom face up to 18 months in prison for refusing to reveal their sources - received some good news today in the form of a brief filed in the United States Supreme Court by the Attorneys General of 34 states and the District of Columbia in support of the two journalists.

The brief not only asked the courts to hear the reporters’ case, but also pointed out that the lack of a federal shield law for journalists undermines the sheild laws of the 49 states that offer protection for their journalists.  The brief urged the Supreme Court to make a similar federal shield law to protect journalists. 

In an interview with Adam Liptak of The New York Times, a pleased Matthew Cooper said, “The state attorney generals have had a lot of experience with shield laws, and they realize they’re totally compatible with law enforcement.”
