PRESS RELEASE:

CSULB ANNOUNCES NEW MFA WRITING PROGRAM
TO BEGIN IN FALL 2006

PEN USA member Brian Alan Lane will be coordinating and teaching in an innovative and exclusive MFA Degree Writing Program at California State University Long Beach.  Set to begin this Fall 2006, the MFA in Theatre Arts, Option in Dramatic Writing, is a prose-grounded curriculum in which writers fully develop their literary voices and then translate their talents to collaborative and performance media, including but not limited to theatre, film, television, podcasting, and emergent art forms.  “Dramatic Writing” encompasses all genres and tonalities, and comedy (for both publication and performance) is specifically covered.  Students’ works will be performed/produced during matriculation, and the program culminates in a thesis of professional/producible quality.  The program is offered by the Department of Theatre Arts in conjunction with the Department of Film and Electronic Arts, the Department of Comparative Literature and Classics, and the Department of Communication Studies, making this the first inter-disciplinary MFA of its kind.  The mission of the program is to create great writers and great teachers of writing, and only six new students will be admitted each year.  PEN USA Member and Award Winner Diana Wagman will be teaching in the core course sequence.  Applications are now being accepted for this Fall’s entering class, and may be obtained by contacting Professor Lane at brianalanlane@earthlink.net or by phone at 818.509.9595 or through the departmental office at 562.985.5404.
