PEN USA’s Freedom to Write Committee is pleased to announce that Honorary Member and 2003 PEN USA’s Freedom to Write Award winner, Raúl Rivero Castañeda, was freed from prison on Tuesday, November 29, 2004. Castañeda’s release followed a day behind Cuba’s release of three other dissidents who had been jailed last year.  Cuba had been called upon to free the dissident prisoners by international human rights groups such as Freedom to Write. The release of Raúl Rivero Castañeda and others reportedly is part of an attempt by Cuba’s government to clean up their country’s human rights record.
