This week we turn our attention back to our honorary members Mamadali Makhmudov, Yusif Ruzimiradov and Muhammed Bekzhon (Bekjanov) Our recent appeals on behalf of Umida Niazova remind us that the situation for writers in Uzbekistan is still dire. These three men have been in prison since August 1999 for their involvement with Erk the newspaper of the Erk poltical party.

- appealling for the release of these three men
- reminding Uzbekistan of it’s international commitments to human rights
- reminding authorities that PEN will continue to campaign for the release of all journalists unjustly imprisoned in Uzbekistan
