March 29, 2006
Story Continued...
PEN USA recently recieved this solicitation in our inbox. PEN is in no way connected to this program. If you are interested please follow the hyperlinks and email links in the description below.
“Dear Writing Friends,
I hope this email finds you well and that you will forgive this brief intrusion. I’m contacting you to let you know about an exciting summer teaching opportunity in Argentina for an especially qualified young writer. Actually a more precise way to describe the position might be something along the lines of “traveling workshop leader” but anyway, we are looking for an outstanding individual who fits all or most of the following criteria. As you will see the criteria are rigorous and rather specific, which is why I’m casting such a broad net among my friends and colleagues in the fields of writing and literature. This program is especially important to me and I figure that my best chances to find the person most suited for it may come from tapping into this particular network. Here are the desired qualifications:
1) Has or will have a minimum of a B.A. as of June ‘06. Preferably has an MFA or is working toward some kind of advanced degree.
2) Is a committed and promising writer, preferably with at least a few meaningful publications, preferably with the background to teach poetry as well as fiction and nonfiction prose.
3) Is female. The group has one leader of each gender, and the male leader is already lined up.
4) Is fluent in Spanish with experience living and/or traveling in either Latin America or Spain, with Argentina-specific experience especially desirable.
5) Has a strong aptitude for leadership. Is some or all of the following: tough, dynamic, adaptable, entrepreneurial, organized, energetic, compassionate, empathetic, a naturally inspiring role model for bright high school students. Youth leadership experienced preferred; international program leadership experience is even better.
The commitment is finite and short term: 4-5 weeks from the end of June to the end of July, with an additional 2-3 days in Vermont for an orientation in mid-June. This is a paid position, although the pay is not astronomical. All expenses are covered, however, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for an adventurous young writer who likes to travel and aspires to teach the craft.
Anyway, I’d appreciate it if you would pass this on to anyone you think might be qualified, or post it in any likely forums. Interested candidates should contact me by email if they have questions (timweed@mac.com), or, even better, simply email their cv with a brief informal cover message to Kelsey Burns, kelsey@goputney.com. Before inquiring, candidates are well-advised to learn more about the program at this website:

Thank you. I’m deeply grateful for your help!
Sincerely,
Tim Weed”
