2016 Freedom to Write Greeting Cards

2016: THE YEAR IN REVIEW

PEN Center USA is unwavering in the belief that information saves lives—the tenet that guides our actions in advocating for imperiled writers through the Freedom to Write (FTW) Advocacy Network. The Advocacy Network expands on cases of global concern that are initiated by PEN International's team of investigators, bringing to light many attempts to limit or suppress the right to free expression of ideas and literature.

In 2016, with your support, PEN Center USA launched 23 Advocacy Network campaigns, gathering thousands of signatures on behalf of imprisoned, imperiled, and persecuted writers in 16 countries.

To close the year, we are sending messages to express our support to 48 writers, novelists, playwrights, poets, journalists, academics, and human rights activists currently imprisoned in 20 countries around the world.
Many of these writers have been in prison or solitary confinement for years. Aslı Erdoğan, a novelist currently imprisoned in Turkey, says:

"My only tie to life are those voices that reach me from outside."

Please join us by signing these messages of support.
