UPDATE: As of September 2, 2014, a video has been released online which claims to show the murder of Steven Sotloff by ISIS. While U.S. government officals analyze the evidence and have yet to confirm, Mr. Sotloff's family released a statement saying it believed he had been killed. PEN Center USA is shocked and dismayed at this news, and sends its deepest condolences to the Sotloff family. Click here for more information via the New York Times.

PEN Center USA is deeply concerned about the fate of Steven Sotloff, an American journalist currently being held by ISIS, the same group responsible for the brutal death of James Foley. Mr. Sotloff's safety and health are in grave danger. He is illegally being held and threatened with execution. PEN Center USA joins the international human rights community in demanding his immediate release and assurances that he has not been tortured or mistreated. We also wish to express our profound sympathy for him and his family during this trying time.
