Usually, But Not Always

In fifth grade, Mrs. Ran told me I wasn’t allowed to bring notebooks to school anymore, which I thought was ironic, because that’s exactly what happened to Harriet in my contemporaneously favorite book, Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh.

Resolutions, Rituals, and Routines

I imagine the new year like this: a whole calendar laid bare, waiting to be marked up—month by month, day by day, moment by moment, by who we are and what we will do with ourselves in this new parameter of time.
