Call To Action: CAMBODIA

Yorm Bopha, a lands rights activist and protest song writer, is currently serving a three-year sentence – of which one year was suspended upon appeal. Arrested on 4 September 2012, Bopha was convicted of “intentional violence with aggravating circumstances” under Article 218 of the Cambodian Criminal Code on 27 December 2012. PEN International believes these charges to be politically motivated, designed to prevent her activities on behalf of the Boeng Kak lake community, and is calling for her immediate and unconditional release.

During her incarceration Bopha has continued her activism, organising and defending her own and fellow prisoners’ rights. She writes protest lyrics to popular tunes, which are then sung at demonstrations. She is also chronicling her daily experiences, which she hopes to publish after her release.

Bopha’s recent, successful campaign for female prisoners to be given the same access to English language lessons as male prisoners brings with it a new demand for precious resources for the women prisoners.
