Improv for Writing with Wendy Goldman

with PEN Center USA member Wendy Goldman

Want to write something new and unexpected? IMPROV FOR WRITING is a workshop that uses improvisational writing games to inspire creativity. They’re called games for a reason: to help you silence your inner critic and get you back in touch with a more playful part of yourself. Nothing to prepare and no performing. Just show up with paper and pens (no computers, please). The class is intended to be light, deep, serious, funny, whatever the moment calls for. It’s process- rather than results-oriented. These short pieces could be the seeds of longer projects you never dreamed of writing. A play? Novel? Screenplay? When you let go of the reins, no telling how you'll surprise yourself.

WENDY GOLDMAN has improvised her way through her life and career. An accomplished actress, she has performed and taught classes at the famed Groundlings Theater. The Groundlings stage was home to the award-winning musical Casual Sex, which she co-wrote and co-starred in with Judy Toll. The play caught the attention of Ivan Reitman, who produced a film adaptation for Universal Studios. Wendy went on to launch a second, successful career as a writer for TV and movies. Most recently, she was a producer on the ABC Family series 10 Things I Hate About You. She also co-created a pilot for HBO based on Christie Mellor’s celebrated book The Three Martini Playdate. Wendy has been a guest lecturer at UC Riverside and at Claremont McKenna College’s Center for Writing and Public Discourse. She currently teaches Improv for Writing workshops in Culver City for both new and experienced writers of all ages. As a writing counselor, her gift of empathy and ability to inspire creativity in others informs her work with private clients. Although she lives in Los Angeles, Wendy refuses to lose her Chicago accent.
