IRAN: PEN mourns the death of journalist and critic Siamak Pourzand

The Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) of PEN International mourns the tragic death on April 29, 2011 of the journalist and critic Siamak Pourzand. Pourzand reportedly committed suicide and years of house arrest and isolation in his home in Tehran. PEN is deeply saddened by Pourzand's death and extends its sincere condolences to his family.

BELARUS: Trials begin of writers and journalists detained since December

Trials have begun against Belarusian writers and journalists who were detained following demonstrations against the results of the flawed presidential election of December 19, 2010. The Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) of PEN International renews its calls for the dismissal of these politically-motivated criminal cases, the release of all writers in prison and an end to their harassment.
