People are the Worst, a reading

With the support of the City Of West Hollywood’s WeHo Arts Grant, PEN Center USA has awarded three WeHo Writing Craft Scholarships to writers residing in West Hollywood.

Congratulations to the three WeHo Writing Craft Scholars: Marcus Berkermeier, John Boucher, Alixen Pham

Marcus Berkemeier grew up in rural Indiana, but has lived in West Hollywood for the past ten years. He studied writing at UCLA, has a bachelor of arts from Indiana University, and a law degree from the George Washington University. His short stories have appeared in the Avalon Literary Review, Ink Monkey Magazine, Inwood Indiana, and the Bombay Review. He recently completed his first novel.

John Boucher started writing in HIV+ writing workshops, he was a 2009 PEN Center USA Emerging Voice Fellow, a recipient of a 2010 UCLA Community Access Scholarship, a 2011 Lambda Literary Foundation Fellow, and a recipient of a 2016 WeHo Writing Craft Scholarship. His first published piece in Washburn University’s inscape literary journal won their 2009 Best Nonfiction award.

Alixen Pham moved to California and has worked in the entertainment industry in the areas of finance and accounting. She is in the process of editing her first book of poetry as she works on writing a novel. She has been a resident of West Hollywood for over 14 years.

The scholarship included: an eight-week Master Class in fiction/nonfiction, three one-day PEN Center USA Craft Sessions, a one-on-one editing session with a professional editor from Rare Bird Lit, free participation in PEN’s Author Evening Series, and all three awarded writers participated in a culminating final reading, People Are The Worst, held at Book Soup on August 18th.

(The one-day Craft Sessions included A Very Short Story with Libby Flores, the upcoming The Power of Your Character’s Voice with Terry McMillan, and Reading Your Work Like a Storytelling God: A Voice Lecture With Dave Thomas.)
