WORLD BUILDING WORKSHOP: AN ALTERNATIVE WAY OF THINKING ABOUT YOUR STORY

Event Date and Time:

WORLD BUILDING: AN ALTERNATIVE WAY OF THINKING ABOUT YOUR STORY

with Charles Yu

In this workshop we will explore the idea of world building. In particular, we will see what this idea means for one of the most important aspects of writing: the beginning. We will explore a story not as a series of events in time, but a world inhabited by the reader. To identify what world building is, we will do an in-class guided reading of a few examples of beginnings from great works of literature. You will leave the workshop excited to construct your own world. After the workshop, each participant will have the option of sending in the first paragraph or page of their work, and Charles will provide a written response and critique.
